CPU limitsThe CPU is holding the graphics card back

A widespread 2019 build that is clearly CPU-limited today. The GTX 1660 Super is still usable for 1080p, but the Zen+ based Ryzen 5 2600 delivers weak minimum frame rates. The good news: the fix is cheap, because AM4 allows an upgrade without changing the board.

Reference values for current AAA titles without upscaling unless stated otherwise. Real values depend on the game, settings and cooling.

Basis for the assessment: published manufacturer specifications and public benchmark hierarchies, applied to this pairing – TechPowerUp GPU Database, Tom's Hardware GPU Hierarchy, ComputerBase GPU Benchmarks.

Strengths

  • Very low power draw, runs on 450 W power supplies
  • AM4 allows a major CPU upgrade without a rebuild
  • Still entirely sufficient for older titles and esports

Weaknesses

  • Zen+ has weak latencies and low minimum frame rates
  • No DLSS and no usable ray tracing on the GTX generation

Optimal memory speed for this CPU

Ryzen 5 2600 · AM4 (DDR4, Zen 2 / Zen+)

2× 16 GB DDR4-3200 CL16, XMP/DOCP enabled

Zen 2 holds 1:1 sync reliably up to DDR4-3600, but DDR4-3200 CL16 is the practical, cheap choice – the gap to 3600 is only 1–3 %. What really matters here is dual channel: Zen chips lose 15–25 % in games on a single module because the chiplet design depends on memory bandwidth. Zen+ (Ryzen 2000) gains almost nothing beyond DDR4-3200.

VRM note (power delivery)

These CPUs stay under 105 W and run on virtually any B450 board. The only caveat is very cheap A320 boards, where the power stages have no heatsink – that costs clock speed with 8-core parts under sustained load.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it stutter despite decent average FPS?

That's the classic CPU-limit pattern: averages look fine while minimum frame rates collapse. Moving to a Zen 3 processor resolves it on the same board.

CPU or graphics card first?

Clearly the CPU. A new graphics card would immediately be held back by the Ryzen 5 2600.
